Биография

Alexander Arkhangelsky was born in 1962, the year which provides the title of his acclaimed first book. Part essay, part biography and part historical novel, 1962, which is addressed to his young son, chronicles the author's life against the changing landscape of Russia.

Arkhangelsky began his career in academia, receiving a doctorate from Moscow State Pedagogical University in 1989 and working in universities in Russia and abroad, before beginning his distinguished career as a journalist, both in print and especially on radio and television, where since the early '90s he has been one of the most prominent voices in debates about politics and culture. He is best known today for writing and presenting the intellectual talk-show Meanwhile on Russia's ‘Culture’ channel. He has been honoured for his television work with several prizes and he himself frequently appears on radio and television talk-shows as a commentator on contemporary society and literature.

A member of the Union of Russian Writers since 1991, Arkhangelsky first published scholarly works of non-fiction, as well as numerous articles on Russian literature, many of which have been translated into foreign languages. He turned to fiction in 2007 with the celebrated novel 1962. Nevertheless, he was already recognised as an expert in this field both as a respected critic and as a member of the 1995 Russian Booker Prize Jury. Arkhangelsky’s wide experience in academia, the media, and now in creative writing, makes him a uniquely insightful commentator on many aspects of contemporary Russia and its culture.

'Alexander Arkhangelsky is one of the most gifted critics of his generation. 1962 is wonderful and tragic; he describes  the lives of separate cities, people and countries, here with such sympathy and understanding, all filtered through an artfully woven web.' Maiya Kucherskaya, Novyi Mir.
